Abstract
We have studied the chromosomal abnormalities and their hematologic and clinical
correlation from 27 patients with acute leukemia who had been admitted to Chuncheon
Sacred Heart Hospital of Hallym University from December, 1986 to January, 1990.
The karyotype has been analyzed from the 17 cases of bone marrow specimens
obtained from 11 patients among the 14 ALL patients; normal karyotypes were found in
3 cases (18%) and abnormal karyotypes were found in 14 cases (82%). Among the
abnormal cases, normal with non-clonal abnormalities were in 2 cases, mixture of
normal and clonally abnormal cells were in 9 cases, and only clonally abnormal cells
were in 3 cases. The karyotype abnormalities of ALL were more frequent in C group
and the tetraploidy was found in 3 cases.
The karyotype has been also analyzed from the 10 cases of bone marrow specimens
obtained from 8 patients among the 13 AML patients ; the normal karyotypes were
obtained from 2 cases (20%) and abnormal karyotypes were obtained from 8 cases
(80%). Among the abnormal cases, normal with non-clonal abnormalities were in 1 case,
mixture of normal and clonally abnormal cells were in 3 cases, and only clonally
abnormal cells in 4 cases. In the karyotype abnormalities of AML, the addition of C
group, A group and E group have been observe in addition to the loss of G group. The
addition of C group has been most frequently detected.
Due to small number of patients taken chemotherapy and to failure in following - up
the patients, it was difficult to find the significant correlation between karyotypes and
prognosis. Instead, we have observed the complete remission in the ALL patients with
tetraploidy and the abnormal karyotypes from one of the relapsed ALL patients whose
karyotypes had been normal in the complete remission.
